As the Founder of Cur8able, I made sure the missio

As the Founder of Cur8able, I made sure the mission statement was simple and laser focused; use fashion styling as a tool to challenge negative perceptions of people with disabilities. This mission is closely tied to the psychology of dress and how people perceive you based on appearance. Without going to deep into this idea it’s basically challenging role schemas as outlined in the “Social Psychology of Dress” (Lennon, Johnson, Rudd 2017) “Role schemas are the sets of behaviors expected of a person in a particular social position.” This is what leads to organizing ideas about people and their value. Schemas in general feed into categorizing others which inevitably contributes to stereotyping.

Cur8able is committed to fighting negative stereotyping of people with all disabilities so we join in the celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This year NDEAM turns 75 and it’s also being celebrated in conjunction with celebrating 30 years of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

What is National Disability Employment Awareness Month?
According to the Library of Congress In 1945 a week-long educational campaign related to disability and work was launched after congress enacted legislation (Public Law 176) to make the first week of October National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. The word “physically” was dropped in 1962 in order to include all types of disabilities. This advocacy week remained in place for 25 years.

How Is NDEAM Celebrated today?
Today NDEAM honors people with disabilities who are part of the work force, and also serves as a reminder of the need to provide equal employment opportunities. This years theme is, “Increasing Access and Opportunity”
