Shaheem is a deaf dancer and actor who’s pioneered American Sign Language (ASL) dancing. The way he marries the two skills is captivating and motivational, As a result, he’s amassed a huge following. With 423,000 followers on Instagram and over 291,000 followers with 3.7 million likes on Tik Tok, he’s redefining what it means to be deaf and communicate with sign language.
Shaheem was inspired to dance by his dad who passed away before he was born. He watched videos of his dad dancing and he was enamored. I had the pleasure of working with Shaheem while styling a photoshoot for Zappos Adaptive. What impresses me about Shaheem is the way he’s shifting the perception of deaf culture through both his work and his eclectic style.
Shaheem also taught his little brother Kida who is not deaf, how to dance. Kida went on to audition for and win So You Think You Can Dance. According to Star Quest, he’s since worked as a sought after choreographer and performer with iconic artists like Usher and Chris Brown. Here they are on Tik Tok.
